OCHA Situation Report No. 1 Romania - Floods 17 April 2000

Romania requests International Assistance 1. Disaster Situation According to the report received from the Civil Protection Command of Romania, floods and landslides triggered by heavy rainfalls and quick snow melting during the first half of April, have affected a quarter of the Romanian territory. Sixteen of the forty two counties of Romania are affected by the floods (Alba, Arad, Bihor, Bistrita, Botosani, Brasov, Caras - Severin, Cluj, Harghita, Hunedoara, Maramures, Mures, Olt, Satu-Mate, Salaj and Timis), where rivers overran their banks destroying houses, farmland, dams, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. 2. Population affected/ Damage Preliminary Figures are as follows: - 9 dead, - 431 homeless people, - 497 stricken localities, - 28 isolated localities, - 4,185 damaged houses, - 5,540 damaged householders, - 2 localities without water supply, - 93,294 hectors of flooded agricultural lands, - 27 affected social - cultural buildings, - 735 damaged bridges and footbridges, - 2 damaged hydrotechnical works, - 14.6 km damaged dams, - 36 km affected national roads, - 182 km affected country roads, - 320 km affected local roads, - 1,8 km damaged railway. 3. Emergency Relief Requirements According to the Civil Protection Command of Romania the following items are required immediately for emergency relief activities in the affected regions. 1 water treatment/purification equipment 100 pcs. 2 engineering equipment for dams and roads rehabilitation - compacting engines, shovels and bulldozers 3 electricity power generation 30 pcs. 4 epidemics shots - countercholleric 50,000 kits. - Typhoidic 50,000 kits. - antitetanus 50,000 kits. 5 sleeping kits ( blankets, mattresses ) 2,000 pcs. 6 tents 200 pcs. 7 field catering 160 pcs. 8 wastewater equipment system 200 pcs. 9 field laundry equipment system 20 pcs. 10 field bath equipment 20 pcs. 11 materials for dams strengthen 3,000 tons. 4. National Response The Government has been providing relief assistance to the victims of this disaster under the co- ordination of the Governmental Commission for Defense against Disaster. The following first- aid items have been distributed: - 6 tons of bread - 6,000 1 oil - 3,000 kg sugar - 10 tons of sparkling mineral water - 10 tons of Miscellaneous 5. The Maltese Red Cross sent 10 trucks of various relief items 6. OCHA is in close contact with National authorities to monitor the situation and review assistance requirements. 7.
