CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE OFFICE SITUATION REPORT: INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE May 10, 2000
SITUATION: Nearly one week after an earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck the Indonesian island Sulawesi, crisis centers and hospitals report that at least 30,000 people are homeless and 46 are now confirmed dead. Emergency workers report that there is a dire need for food, water, and medicine, especially for those who were injured in last Thursdays earthquake. The strong quake caused huge tidal waves and was followed by some 200 aftershocks that have severely impaired roads and communications systems. Church World Service has staff on the island of Sulawesi and has been involved in food security programming there for over 2 years. RESPONSE: CWS is sending $25,000 in blanket funds to CWS-Indonesia to assist in the provision of blankets and bedding for 5000 persons affected by the quake. CWS partners in the region are monitoring the response and may be submitting an appeal to the CWS-Indonesia office. Call the CWS HOTLINE for updates: (800) 297-1516, ext. 111.
