OCHA Situation Report No. 3 Indonesia - Earthquake 7 June 2000

Situation and Damages 1. The Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Jakarta reports on the situation as follows: - In all, 97 people confirmed killed (58 persons in Bengkulu city, 39 persons in south Bengkulu), while the latest media reports indicate that 117 people have been killed. - Some 1,900 persons injured, half of them seriously. These figures are expected to rise once rescue teams are able to reach the more remote areas, including Enggano island (population 2,000). - The Bengkulu airport remains closed to all aircraft with the exception of military aircraft and small planes. It is expected, however, to reopen to all traffic within the next 48 hours which will permit humanitarian relief supplies to be airlifted into the region. Most relief operations are currently being implemented by chartered helicopters, hired by relief organizations. - Communications with Bengkulu have now been restored. - The main hospital in Bengkulu is severely damaged with staff and patients being evacuated to nearby tents. There has been a request for shelter material, tents and a generator for the hospital. UNHCR has been approached for shelter items from their store at Surabaya. Needs 2. According to an UNDAC member, who is currently conducting an initial assessment in Bengkulu city, water and sanitation, particularly medical equipment and shelters for the persons still staying outside, are most needed. 3. The food situation appears to be under control with immediate supplies being rushed to the area from neighbouring provinces. Further supplies will be brought in once the airport is fully operational. Water supplies are severely restricted. 4. No requirement for search and rescue teams at this stage. National and International Response 5. According to the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Jakarta, Bakornas PB has indicated that the Government would welcome international assistance. 6. Emergency relief activities from the Indonesian Government, donors, NGOs and the UN are as follows: Organization - Relief Activities Indonesia (Among others) - The Navy is sending relief supplies, including essential medicines, which, in addition to medical supplies already provided/pledged, is expected to meet immediate needs - Food assistance - Medical experts from neighbouring provinces Australia - Two UNDAC members Iceland - One UNDAC member Japan - In-kind contribution worth approximately USD 140,000, including 100 tents, 100 ground sheets, 321 plastic sheets, 100 set of carpenter's tools and 144 shovels - A 19-member Japan Disaster Relief team, including 3 doctors and 6 nurses, which arrived in Bengkulu on 7 June Netherlands - Two helicopters, naval vessels - Fresh water Singapore - A 20-member medical team together with emergency supplies worth around USD 29,000 - One UNDAC member Switzerland - Two experts from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to cooperate with the UNDAC team - CHF 50,000 (about USD 30,000) for purchase of medical supplies - Part of the medical supplies will be handed over to Satkorlak (provincial emergency response entity) in Bengkulu United States - Cash contribution of USD 25,000 to be used to meet the immediate relief needs of the affected population IFRC - launched a preliminary appeal for CHF 5,353,933 (approximately USD 3.2 million) to assist 140,000 beneficiaries, almost 10% of the population of the affected area on 6 June - CHF 250,000 (USD 150,000) from its Disaster Relief Emergency Fund - A 8-person team has arrived in Bengkulu on 7 June and is carrying out an immediate assessment Private sector - Danzas (a Swiss transport company) provided a truck to carry part of the medical supplies purchased with the Swiss donation to Bengkulu - Novarties and Roche (Swiss pharmaceutical enterprises) will provide medical supplies within a value up to IDR 300 million (USD 41,000) and IDR 150 million (USD 20,000) each of them Organization Relief Activities UN-DMT Jakarta - Donors meeting currently being arranged for Friday, 9 June following details of first assessment report from the UNDAC team - UNDP, WFP and WHO dispatched staff together with the UNDAC team UNDP - One UNDAC member OCHA - A 5-person United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team to Indonesia - Two members assist the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Jakarta and also liaise with the Indonesian Government, donors, NGOs and the UN to coordinate relief efforts - One UNDAC team member is already in situ, conducting an initial assessment in Bengkulu city, while the other team members will arrive in Bengkulu in the morning of 8 June 7.
