OCHA Situation Report No. 6 Cambodia - Floods 2 October 2000
United Nations Inter-Agency Appeal for Emergency Relief and Initial Rehabilitation 1. This year's monsoon floods are recorded as the worst in Cambodia in 30 years. More than 2.2 million people - or 20% of the country's population - have been affected. While the Cambodian Government has been actively leading the relief operation, its relief resources, in particular food stocks, have been depleted. The Government has therefore requested urgent international assistance. 2. The UN Inter-Agency Appeal for Emergency Relief and Initial Rehabilitation has been prepared by the UN Disaster Management Team (UNDMT) in Phnom Penh, under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator. The UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team, led by the OCHA Regional Disaster Response Advisor for Asia, has supported this effort. 3. The UN Appeal seeks contributions worth USD 10,712,754 to assist 850,000 beneficiaries for 6 months. The UN agencies (UNDP, WFP, WHO, UNICEF, FAO and OCHA) aim to provide assistance in the following sectors: food (USD 8,624,034), shelter (USD 350,000), health, water and sanitation (USD 820,000), education/school repair (USD 400,000), agriculture/seed and household agricultural production (USD 478,720) and coordination and management (USD 40,000). 4. The UN Appeal was launched on 2 October 2000 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and is herewith also launched through OCHA Geneva and OCHA New York. 5. As indicated in the Appeal document, donors can make their contributions directly to the Cambodian Government or to the relevant UN agency. OCHA is ready to serve as a channel for unearmarked contributions towards the relief and initial rehabilitation activities of the Appeal, which will be allocated in consultation with the UN Resident Coordinator and with relevant UN agencies according to agreed priorities. OCHA will provide donors with written confirmation and pertinent details concerning the utilization of the funds contributed. Funds channelled through OCHA should be transferred to OCHA account No. CO-590.160.0, Swift code: UBSWCHZ12A at the UBS AG, P.O. Box 2770, CH-1211 Geneva 2, with reference: OCHA - Cambodia - Floods. 6. For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform OCHA Geneva, as indicated below, on relief missions/pledges/contributions and their corresponding values by item. 7. The UN Appeal is available on the OCHA Internet Website at http://www.reliefweb.int and from OCHA Geneva and New York, on request.
