OCHA Situation Report No. 2 Tanzania - Earthquake 5 October 2000
Situation This report summarises the information received from the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Tanzania. 1. According to the report from the Office of the Prime Minister, the worst hit district was Nkansi, in Rukwa Region. In Nkansi, several aftershocks were felt during the day of 2 October, after the first powerful earthquake. One death and several injuries have been reported. 2. In Isale, Kipili, Kirando, Namanyere, Ntatumbila and Wampembe, in Nkansi district, several houses were completely destroyed and over 150 houses sustained cracks. In the village of Kate in the district, 7 houses and one dispensary with the capacity of 10 beds and 12 rooms were demolished. No water services are available for the Kate village. 3. The Government authorities have not been able to obtain the information from some of the villages in the district, due to the lack of transportation capacity and the disruption of communications. 4. OCHA is in close contact with the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator and will revert with further information if the situation warrants it. 5.
