CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM SITUATION REPORT: JAVA (INDONESIA) LANDSLIDES November 10, 2000

SITUATION: At least 52 people have been killed this week in landslides triggered by torrential rains in Indonesia's Central Java province. The landslides hit the hilly district of Purworejo in the early hours of November 5 after three days of heavy rain, according to media reports. Most residents were sleeping when the mud buried seven villages in the area, located 240 miles southeast of Jakarta. Last week, landslides killed 36 people in the same region, the Associated Press (AP) reported. That death toll is expected to climb, officials said. RESPONSE: CWS Indonesia is providing $20,000 from the CWS Blanket Fund for blankets, tarps, mosquito nets and mats to assist 1,350 individuals displaced by the landslides in central Java. CWS is also providing $10,000 from the CWS Directors Advance Fund for jerry cans, cooking utensils, pans and woks to 1,000 displaced persons for immediate food security needs. Those wishing to support the effort for this emergency should forward financial donations to account #6999. Call the CWS HOTLINE for updates: (800) 297-1516, ext. 111.
