CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM SITUATION REPORT: VIETNAM FLOODING November 21, 2000
SITUATION: At least 31 people have been killed in Vietnam in flooding from rainfall in the last week that swelled rivers already overflowing from a season of heavy rains. An average of a foot of rain fell in the affected coastal areas, the Associated Press (AP) reported. In all, some 3,250 homes were flooded and nearly 10,000 acres of rice fields were submerged, according to the AP, quoting the National Flood and Storm Control Department. This follows months of heavy monsoon rains - twice the average - that have hit Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, as well as Vietnam, resulting in extensive flooding of the entire Mekong watershed area. RESPONSE: Church World Service has issued an appeal for $386,680 to assist efforts by CWS in both Vietnam and Cambodia. In Vietnam, these efforts have included providing $40,000 in Blanket Funds for the purchase of blankets, plastic sheeting and mosquito nets for survivors in affected areas, including Long An province, the site of CWS project work For more information on the response, see www.cwserp.org CHURCH WORLD SERVICE, Attn.
