OCHA Situation Report No. 2 Moldova - Storm, rain and frost 15 December 2000

Update on the situation General Situation 1. Extreme weather conditions occurred in late November 2000 in Moldova. Six counties in the northern and central regions were hit, representing approximately 54% of the territory of the country. An estimated 2.6 million persons live in the affected areas. Assessment of the damage 2. As a result of the storm, the power supply of 465 settlements in the six affected counties has been disrupted. A total of 3 402 km of power line, 42 174 power transmission towers and poles, 6995 communication lines and 2 715 poles are damaged/destroyed. The economic loss is estimated at approximately 370.426 million Lei (USD 31.6 million). 3. Notwithstanding the fact that all available domestic resources are presently deployed in the affected areas (some 1515 experts and 280 units of equipment), the following assistance is being sought from the international community to complement national efforts: Electric generators: 20 Primus kitchen or equivalent: 420 Lanterns: 420 Pneumatic instruments for cutting metal, 20 Fuel: diesel, kerosene: 240 MT Field heaters, fuelled with kerosene: 180 Equipment for electricians: 220 sets Food: 200MT Winter clothes and coverlets: 4800 sets Motor-saw: 60 Bilateral Assistance 4. EMERCOM of Russia informed OCHA of the humanitarian assistance provided to the population of Moldova on 8 December 2000, for a total value of USD 101 210. Medicines, 614 kg Blankets, 2 200 pieces Dry milk mixtures, 3.5 MT Air heaters, 6 pieces Winter working clothes, 300 sets Tool kits for electricians, 150 kits Airlift UN System Response 5.
