Situation
1. The unusually heavy rains, which are battering Southern Africa, have
created the most serious situation in Malawi since the floods in 1997.
There are four most affected districts: Nsanje and Chikwaga in the South
and Salima and Nkhotakota in central Malawi.
2. UN estimates put the figure of affected close to 300,000. More than
130,000 have been displaced. WFP is starting a feeding programme for some
60,000 people.

3. On the basis of recent assessment the Government is now appealing for
6.7 million USD, broken down into the following components: (full details
available with OCHA).
- Emergency relief: 1,094, 466
Blankets, maize, plastic plates and sheets and transport costs. Government
has allocated over 460,000 USD from its own resources to this sector.
- Health : 122, 908
To treat expected malaria, cholera, diarrhea cases
- Water provision to displaced: 2,160,000
Drilling of 150 bore holes
- Road repairs: 2,187,500
Total of six road sections, re-instating of drainage structures, grading
- Monitoring in affected areas: 26,208
Strengthening of met services
- Mitigation work in agriculture: 1,109,106
Provision of seeds, tools and veterinary services
4. OCHA is prepared to serve as channel for cash contributions to be used
for immediate relief assistance, in co-ordination/consultation with
relevant organisations in the United Nations system. Funds should be
transferred to OCHA account no. CO-590.160.0, Swift code: UBSWCHZ12A at
the UBS AG, P.O. Box 2770, CH-1211 Geneva 2, with reference: "OCHA -
Malawi - floods 2001". OCHA provides donors with written confirmation and
pertinent details concerning the utilisation of the funds contributed
