OCHA Situation Report No. 2
Ukraine - Floods
12 March 2001
The Government of Ukraine provided OCHA with the following updated
information on the effects of the floods in the western part of the
country:
General Situation
1. As a result of melting snow and heavy rains, severe floods have taken
place in 12 regions of the Zakarpatian Oblast. Latest information on
damages indicate the following:
- 6 casualties
- 11,579 persons temporarily resettled
- 238 settlements affected
- 31,509 buildings flooded and partially damaged
- 942 buildings destroyed
- 13 settlements without power supply
- 17 automatic exchange stations damaged
- 50 km of roads damaged
- 9 km of railways damaged
- 5 settlements without gas supply
National Response
2. Governmental authorities have deployed national assets to cope with the
floods. Figures on national response are the following : - 24,661 rescuers
and emergency workers deployed - 4 SAR units activated - 1027 pieces of
equipment and heavy machinery provided by Ministries and National
Agencies. - 5 helicopters utilized for medical evacuation, delivery of
drugs and food supply, and survey of power lines.
Request for Assistance
3. The following requirements for foreign assistance are still
outstanding:
Food for 11,579 persons for 5 days
Warm cloth 2733 sets
Slipping bags 2000 pieces
Bed-clothes 3000 sets
Drugs List to follow
Water pumps 500
Mobile generators 50
Electrocardiograph 95
Microscope 46
Mobile X-ray machine 14
Tonometer 300
Four-wheel drive ambulance 20
Point of entry : Chop, Uzhgorod - Airports: Uzhgorod and Lviv ? Point of
Delivery: Khust, Vinogradov, Irshava, T'achevo, Rakhov, Mukachevo,
Uzhgorod.
All those wishing to assist Ukraine should coordinate dispatch of
assistance with:
