Request for urgently needed relief supplies
Situation
1. As assessment missions continue in remote areas, latest figures show
that the death toll has now been put at 102 people dead. 1,368 people have
been injured and 53 are still missing . Approximately 11,335 houses have
been affected/destroyed.
2. In spite of the relatively low number of casualties, the magnitude and
impact of this emergency is overwhelming, specially for those affected,
most of them poor people that have lost all their belongings and housing.
3. The Ports of Matarani and Ilo are both operational and have not
suffered major damage. The roads between these cities are being cleared
and are accessible.
Request for international assistance
4. The Peruvian authorities have provided OCHA with a list of urgent
requirements as follows:
- Blankets, Food, Kitchen utensils, Medicines, Portable sanitary
units/Latrines
Water purification units.
5. The Peruvian delegation to UNESCO is requesting emergency assistance
to assess the damages to education infrastructure in the affected areas.
The Government is also requesting resources from the World Patrimony Fund
for the restoration of the cathedral and for the re-prioritization of the
Master Plan in light of requirements in the aftermath of the earthquake.
It should be noted that UNESCO declared Arequipa as Patrimony of Humanity.

National Response
7. The Council of Ministers of Peru has declared the state of emergency
in the Departments of Arequipa, Moquegua, Tacna and the provinces of
Parinacochas, Puaca de Sara Sara in the Department of Ayacucho.
The Ministry of the Presidency will allocate 50,000,000 Soles
(approximately USD 14,600,000) and 100,000,000 Soles (approximately USD
30,000,000) will be reassigned from the Fund for Housing to the Bank of
Materials for reconstruction.
8. The National Civil Defence Institute (INDECI) is the entity
responsible for all response coordination aspects of the relief operations
and the consignee for external donations.
International Response
9. In response to the Government's appeal of relief items, OCHA and WHO
are jointly preparing a relief flight containing water distribution
equipment and Emergency health kit.
10. The Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO ) which is working
closely with Peruvian authorities in assessing health needs, is seeking
USD 605,000: USD 260,000 for repair of hospital equipment, provision of
medical supplies, emergency health assistance; USD 180,000 for water
supply, sanitation; USD 135,000 for vector control; USD 30,000 for
preventive health care campaigns.

12. Together with UNICEF, WFP, INDECI, the UNDAC/UNDP/SDR team continues
assessments in the affected area.

13. Information on contributions to this disaster may be found by

14. For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform OCHA
Geneva, on relief missions/pledges/contributions and their corresponding
values by item. Donors are encouraged to notify OCHA Geneva of their
contributions to this disaster using the OCHA Standardised Contributions
Recording Format, available electronically on the above-mentioned
Financial Tracking Website.
15. OCHA is prepared to serve as channel for cash contributions to be
used for immediate relief assistance, in co-ordination/consultation with
relevant organizations in the United Nations system. Funds should be
transferred to OCHA account no. CO-590.160.0, Swift code: UBSWCHZ12A at
the UBS AG, P.O. Box 2770, CH-1211 Geneva 2, with reference: "OCHA - Peru
- Earthquake" OCHA provides donors with written confirmation and
pertinent details concerning the utilization of the funds contributed.
