China - Typhoon Chebi
28 June 2001
The following is a summary of a report issued by the Chinese Ministry of
Civil Affairs (MOCA) on 25 June and provided through the UN Resident
Coordinator's Office in Beijing, China.
1. Typhoon Chebi left substantial damage in southeastern China over the
last weekend. The typhoon landed in Gaoshan Township of Fuqin City in
Fujian Province at 22.00 hrs (local time) on 23 June 2001. Afterwards, it
swept northward and travelled through Changle and Ningde, then entered
Zhejiang Province early in the morning of 24 June.
2. Due to strong and high speed winds and high tides at sea, the typhoon
affected large areas: houses collapsed, trees were uprooted, electricity
poles broke down, sea dykes were destroyed and marine aquatic centres were
damaged. Changle International Airport in Fuzhou City and the
Fuzhou-Quanzhou express train line were forced to close down. Water and
electricity supplies were cut off in some counties and cities.
3. Casualties and major damage in Fujian caused by the typhoon were as
follows (as reported on 24 June):
- Affected population: 2,895,000 people of a total 4.1 million in 21
cities/counties
- People killed and missing: 54 people killed, 71 missing
- People evacuated: 213,000
- Houses collapsed or damaged: 181,000
- Crops affected: 121,000 hectares; harvest of 59,000 hectares will be
reduced and 16,200 hectares of crops have been completely lost
- Direct economic losses: CNY 3,910 million (USD 473 million) (including
loss for aquatic business amounting to CNY 2,060 million (USD 249
million) and for water conservation projects amounting to CNY 430
million (USD 52 million)).
4. The Chinese MOCA has been monitoring the situation. No request for
international assistance has been made to date.
5. OCHA is in close contact with the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in
Beijing, and will revert with further information if the situation
warrants it.
