OCHA Situation Report No. 5 Mexico - Hurricane Juliette 29 September 2001

This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any country. 1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 1200 GMT, 29 September 2001, the center of hurricane Juliette was located near latitude 23.5 north, longitude 110.8 west, or about 70 miles (115 km) northwest of Cabo San Lucas. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/hr) with higher gusts. 2. Juliette has been meandering during the past 6 to 12 hours. Little motion is expected today and the center of Juliette will likely continue near or along the west coast of the Baja California peninsula prolonging the hurricane and tropical storm conditions over central and southern Baja. 3. Hurricane Warning remains in effect for southern Baja California along and south of a line from Cabo San Lazaro to Los Burros. Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect along the west coast of Baja California north of Cabo San Lazaro to Punta Abreojos and along the east coast of Baja California north of Los Burros to Santa Rosalia. Situation 4. In the southernmost part of Baja California, power lines have been downed and roads have been cut off. Damage caused to housing. National response 5. The Governor of the State of Baja California Sur has declared the disaster affected areas a Disaster Zone. 6. Police and rescue workers provided assistance to some 3,000 people cut off by heavy flooding, and evacuated some 800 people from their vulnerable housing. 7. The Government of Mexico has not requested international assistance. 8.
