OCHA Situation Report No. 2 Chad - Floods 05 October 2001

Government of the Republic of Chad requests international assistance This report is based on information provided by UNDP Chad. Situation 1. Torrential rains in the past weeks provoked flooding after major rivers Logone (South), Chari (Center-West) and Batha (Center-East) burst their banks. In total, floods affected 129,500 people and 100 persons are reported dead or missing. 2. Most adversely affected areas are the departments of Tandjilé East and West, Bahr Koh, Dar Sila, Logone Occidental, Logone Oriental, Chari-Banguirmi Salamat, Batha East and West, Mayo Dalla, Mayo Bonoye and Kabia. 3. Because of the floods, the famine and health situations are worsening. More than 4,350 cases of cholera have been reported since June provoking 148 dead people (mainly in Chari-Barguimi, Mayo Kebi, Lac and Kanem). Request for international assistance 5. The Government has officially requested international assistance on 28 September 2001 to the UN Resident Coordinator Office. 6. While waiting for the latest needs assessment mission to quantify needs, needs identified so far are: Food Blankets Tents Gunny bags (jute) Material for reconstruction and rehabilitation of houses National and international Response 7. The Government has carried out two joint assessment missions on 20 and 21 September including three Ministers, the UN System (WFP) and other partners (The French Embassy and the European Union's Delegation). Furthers assessments will be carried out involving more partners. 8. Following a first meeting on 07 September (cf. OCHA Situation Report No 1), a plan of action has been introduced during a meeting between the Government and humanitarian partners on 05 October under the auspices of the Permanent Secretary of the national crisis management committee (CASAGC - Comité d'Action pour la Sécurité Alimentaire et la Gestion des Crises). 9.
