The Caribbean - Tropical Storm Michelle
Honduras, Nicaragua
1 November 2001
1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 1500 GMT, 01
November 2001, the center of tropical storm Michelle was located near
latitude 17.2 north, longitude 83.9 west, or about 330 miles (525 km)
south-southeast of the western tip of Cuba. Maximum sustained winds are
near 70 mph (110 km/hr) with higher gusts.
HONDURAS
2. The Comisión Permanente de Contingencias (COPECO) reported on 31
October 2001:
- overall number of affected: 20,282 people
- persons dead: 4
- people missing: 7
- people evacuated: 4,070
3. The Government allocated 1.5 million Honduras Lempiras (approximately
USD 96,000) from the Emergency Fund for the purchase of food supplies and
relief items for the affected people in the north of the country. The
Instituto Hondureo de Mercadeo Agricola has been instructed to utilise the
reserve of grain to assist the affected people.
4. The Government confirms that, so far, national resources are
sufficient to meet emergency needs.
NICARAGUA
5. The Government declared on 31 October 2001 the Estado de Alerta
Amarilla in the Región Autónoma del Atlántico Norte (RAAN), activating
regional emergency committees, distribution centers and shelters.
6. The Sistema Nacional para la Prevención, Mitigación y Atención de
Desastres reports:
- persons dead: 4
- people missing : 12
- some 1,000 affected
7. The Sistema Nacional para la Prevención, Mitigación y Atención de
Desastres reports on 31 October that food supplies (3,500 pounds) have
been distributed to people affected.
8. The Government has not requested the United Nations to launch an
appeal for international assistance.
