OCHA Situation Report No. 1 Brazil - Floods 27 December 2001

1. For several days heavy rains have caused flooding and mudslides in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Most affected areas are shanty-town dwellings, particularly in the city of Petropolis. 2. The death toll has reached almost fifty and some 1,500 to 2,000 persons have had to leave their homes. 3. Rescue and relief efforts are undertaken at the municipality as well as State level. Staments have been by the State Government as well as the Federal Government regarding reconstruction of housing. 4. OCHA remains in contact with the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Brazil. The Government of Brazil has not requested assistance from the United Nations System. 5..
