Update - Philippines
Tropical Storm 'Jolina'
Geneva, 17 August, 2001

Dear colleagues,

34 people were killed and 7 claimed missing due to floods and landslides
triggered by torrential rains in Mindanao, Philippines.

The past few days, state of emergency was declared in, at least, three
regions in Visayas and Mindanao. Already vulnerable, these areas are now
facing flashfloods, landslides and heavy flooding.

In Visayas, particularly in Negros Island, at least 13 people were killed
due to heavy rains and flooding.


As of yesterday, tropical depression 'Jolina' brought torrential rains
causing heavy flooding in Northern Luzon, Central Luzon and the National
Capital Region.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical
Services (PAGASA), Jolina will remain static for the day.


It has been also confirmed that the typhoon 'Pabuk' in the vicinity of
Northern Marianas was estimated to be 1,840 km east of Northern Luzon.
These weather deviations will continue to induce monsoon rains in the
country.

ACT member The National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) that
is already involved in assisting victims of Typhoon Feria (ACT appeal
ASPH12), will soon seek to expand their appeal in order to accommodate a
new emergency relief project the population affected by 'Jolina'.
