OCHA Situation Report No. 4 Sudan - Floods 29 August 2001

This report is based on information provided by the Government of Sudan (GoS) and the OCHA office in Sudan. Situation 1. Flash floods and the Nile river's seasonal rising waters have affected ten States, of which River Nile, Sennar, Kassala, and South Darfur States are the most adversely affected. Floods are now receding in certain areas (Khartoum) but the situation downstream to northern states will soon become preoccupying. 2. In total, three people have died and 90,195 persons have been affected by floods. Latest assessments carried out in the River Nile State have recorded up to 36,650 people affected. An estimated 17,860 people are affected in Sennar State and 14,000 in Kassala. 3. 2,582 houses were completely destroyed and 3,821 partially damaged in 98 villages. More than half of the destroyed houses were located in Kassala state (1338) while three quarters of damaged houses are in Kassala and River Nile states. Sennar flood assessment 4. On the 20th of August 2001, a team of UN Agencies, INGOs and the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) from the GoS carried a rapid flood assessment in one of the worst affected States: Sennar. 5. The Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) of the GoS indicated that the three Provinces of Sennar (Sinja, Sinar and Aldindir), populated by 1,272,728 people, reported 881 families displaced, 500 destroyed and 743 partially destroyed houses. Worst affected areas were Um Baneen (Sinja), Gazair Agaleen (Al Soki, Aldindir) and Sinja (Sinja). 6. The health situation continues to deteriorate adversely affecting the displaced families in Sennar. According to Red Crescent dispensaries of the region, many infections have been reported in recent days and will cause a serious threat as flood waters recede. Malaria (76 cases and four death), diarrhoea (25), respiratory infections (URTI and LRTI) and eye infections were reported in Sinja regional hospital in the first three weeks of August 2001. Needs 7. In line with the general needs identified by the national authorities and reported in OCHA Situation Report N°3 of 21 August 2001 (tents, plastic sheets, medicines, water pumps, sanitation, food and empty sacks), a detailed list has been made available after the HAC/UN Agencies/NGOs' Sennar above-mentioned floods assessment. The GoS and the UNRC's Office are considering the consignment of relief items from OCHA Brindisi warehouse. 9. HAC, UN agencies and NGOs will meet soon to follow-up on the flood situation and envisage further assessment missions. Results of the Atbara needs assessment mission should be available soon. Contributions 10. Contributions reported to OCHA as of 28 August are of USD 156,017. 11. USAID/BHR/OFDA is establishing a fund of USD 25,000 to be used to meet the immediate needs of victims. The assistance will be provided to the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) working with the Sudan Red Cross. 12. OCHA is prepared to serve as channel for cash contributions to be used for immediate relief assistance, in coordination/consultation with relevant organizations in the United Nations system. Funds should be transferred to UNOG General Fund No. 001-1-508629, ABA Code 021000021 (US Banking Code) at the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York, with the reference: OCHA ? Sudan ? Floods 2001. OCHA provides donors with written confirmation and pertinent details concerning the utilization of the funds contributed. 13. For coordination purposes, donors are requested to inform OCHA Geneva, as indicated below, on relief missions/pledges/contributions and their corresponding values by item. 14.
