OCHA Situation Report No. 4 Mexico - Hurricane Juliette 28 September 2001

This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any country. 1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 1500 GMT, 28 September 2001, the center of hurricane Juliette was located near latitude 23.3 north, longitude 111.0 west, or about 75 miles (120 km) west-northwest of Cabo San Lucas. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/hr) with higher gusts. 2. Juliette is moving toward the north at near 3mph (6km/hr). A slow track toward the north-northwest, roughly parallel to the southwest coast of Baja California, is expected during the next 24 hours. 3. Hurricane Warning remains in effect along the west coast of the Baja California from Cabo San Lazaro southward, and along the east coast of Baja California from Los Burros southward. Tropical Storm Warning is in effect along the west coast of Baja California north of Cabo San Lazaro to Punta Abreojos, along the east coast of Baja California from north of Los Burros northward to Santa Rosalia, and on the Mexican mainland coast from Mazatlan northward to Yavaros. Situation 4. So far, the following States on the mainland have been affected by heavy rains: Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero and, in the south-east; Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, Sinaloa and Zacatenas in the center-west. 5. Media report five persons dead and, in the southwestern state of Michoacán, some 1,000 people homeless. National response 6. The National System for Civil Protection (SINAPROC) continues alerting the population living in vulnerable areas about the possible rising of the level of rivers and landslides. 7. The Mexican authorities, including the Army, have been sending transport and rescue aircraft, medical teams and emergency supplies. 8.
