CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM SITUATION REPORT: AFGHANISTAN EARTHQUAKE April 12, 2002

SITUATION: Another earthquake has hit Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan – the site of an earthquake last month and the third major quake to hit northern Afghanistan this year. Dozens -- at least 30 people and maybe 100 -- were killed in today's quake, and the death toll may rise. However, officials said casualties will not be as high as last month's quake because many of the survivors of that are still living in tents or in the open, the BBC reported. Most of the casualties in the current quake lived in the village of Doabi (or Dawabi), which is near Nahrin, the city devastated by the March earthquake. At least 800 people are believed to have perished in that disaster. RESPONSE: CWS is monitoring the situation; following last month's quake, Church World Service (CWS) Pakistan/Afghanistan distributed 7,000 quilts through its local partner Shuhada, as well as shelter assistance and food through its partner Norwegian Project Office (NPO). The quilts are made by Afghan women as part of a CWS-sponsored quilt-making income generation project. Call the CWS HOTLINE for updates: (800) 297-1516.
