Ecuador - Floods
30 April 2002


Situation

1.  Heavy rains continue to trigger floods and landslides in Ecuador.
During the weekend through 28 April 2002, downpours mainly affected the
Pichincha and Guayas provinces.

2.  Civil Defense reported the following information about the overall
impact on persons and housing as of 29 April:

National Response

3.  In the province of Pichincha, Civil Defense evacuated 138 people to
temporary shelters. Rescue operations and road repair works are being
carried out by Civil Defense in cooperation with the Provincial Council of
Pichincha.

4.  In the province of Guayas, 32 people were evacuated.

5.  According to the newspaper El Comercio, the Epidemiological Service of
the Manabi province reported six cases of leptospirosis in Portoviejo.

7.  The Government of Ecuador has not requested international assistance.
