El Salvador Earthquake - Appeal LASA-11
Geneva, 30 April 2002


A major earthquake of 7.9 on the Richter scale shook El Salvador on 13
January 2001.  The south-central area of the country was hardest hit,
though many cities, towns and rural areas throughout the country suffered
considerable damage.  A second earthquake rocked El Salvador one month
later.  The quake of 13 February registered a magnitude of 6.6 on the
Richter scale.  The most affected region this time was the center of the
country, a small area where the Departments of la Paz, Cucatlán and San
Vicente converge. A third tremor of 5.3 in the Richter scale - hit El
Salvador on 17 February provoking several landslides and exacerbating the
damages caused by the first two earthquakes.

An ACT appeal was issued on 25 January 2001 and revised on 22 February
2001 including the proposals from LWF/DWS El Salvador Program and the
Project Counselling Service - PCS.  So far the activities have been
accomplished as foreseen, however, in some activities of the appeal are
still in process due to the late arrival of some funds. The ACT members in
El Salvador have requested an extension of the date of completion of the
appeal from January 30, 2002 to July 31, 2002. The ACT CO has agreed with
this extension.
