Haiti - Floods
31 May 2002


Situation

1.  Heavy rains in the southern peninsula of Haiti since May 24 have
triggered floods, washed away bridges and roads, eroded hillsides and
destroyed livestock. The most affected areas are the departments of
Grand'Anse and Sud.

2.  The Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Haiti
reported that Civil Protection authorities conducted an aerial survey of
the affected areas on 29 May.

3.  The Direction of Civil Protection (DCP) reported the following impact
on people and infrastructure as of 28 May:

- Department of Grand'Anse: 2 people dead, 120 families affected, 3
  homes destroyed, 57 homes damaged. The potable water system has been
  damaged in Petit Trou de Nippes.
- Department of Sud: 10 people dead, 4 people injured, 18 people
  missing.  The potable water system has been damaged.


4.  DCP convened a meeting on 28 May to assess the damage, particularly in
the agriculture sector and drinking water system. Assistance for the
purchase of relief supplies and cleaning tools are required.


Contributions

5.  The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has contributed
USD 50,000 toward the relief efforts. The contribution will be channeled
through the Catholic Relief Services.

6.  The Government of Haiti has not requested international assistance.
