JAMAICA - FLOODS
Geneva, 3 June, 2002


Over the last week, heavy rain have caused flooding and landslides in
Jamaica. The most affected areas are the parishes of Clarendom, St.
Catherine. Other affected areas are Kingston, St. Thomas, St. Ann,
Portland and St. Elizabeth.

It has been reported that 6 persons have died and 100 have been evacuated
from water-logged and landslide-damaged communities. The main losses are
in crops and livestock.

ACT member in Jamaica, the Council of Churches of Jamaica reports that
there are 512 persons in desperate need of assistance some of whom are
sheltering in churches. The most urgent needs are shelter, food, clothing
and medical relief. The Council of Churches of Jamaica is carrying out a
needs assessment and an ACT appeal might be forthcoming.
