Situation
1. The Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nicaragua
reports that according to the Civil Defense, as of 2 June, 1,030 people
were still in 16 temporary shelters.
2. The Government maintains the 'state of natural disaster' for the
departments of the Pacific coast and the yellow alert for the rest of the
country. Civil Defense authorities are assisting the affected population
in returning to their homes and distributing food packages to cover
individual needs for 20 days.
3. On 31 May, the National System for Prevention Mitigation and Attention
to Disasters (SNPMAD) revised the estimate of the overall cost for
emergency/rehabilitation needs arising from the disaster at USD 4,636,296.

International Response
4. The following contributions have been reported to the Office of the
United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nicaragua:
- Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO): technical assistance to the
Ministry of Health in evaluating the guidelines on sanitation in floods
situation
- United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA): USD 13,000 worth of medicines
- United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF): USD 25,000 in emergency relief
items (sheets, plates, water tanks, soaps and kitchen utensils) for the
affected population in Managua
- El Salvador: 55 tents, 600 sheets, 120 water bladders (5 cubic meters),
15 water bladders (1 cubic meter), and medicines for 3,000 people and
clothing
- Japan: corrugated iron sheets for housing construction
- Spain: 11.6 tons of canned tuna and sardines for 2,500 people covering
the period of 15-20 days
5. The UN Resident Coordinator in Nicaragua will convene a meeting today
with Government authorities, the National System for Prevention,
Mitigation and Attention to Disasters (SNPMAD), the United Nations system
and donor governments represented in Nicaragua, on the situation and unmet
needs.
6. The Government of Nicaragua has requested assistance from locally
based donors. Appeal for further assistance will be considered if the
situation becomes worse.
