OCHA Situation Report No. 3 Nicaragua - Rains 6 June 2002

Situation 1. The Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nicaragua reports that rains have decreased and the yellow alert for the Pacific coast has been lifted. 2. According to the Sistema Nacional de Prevencion, Mitigacion y Atencion a Desastres (SNPMAD), the final figures on the impact on people and infrastructure are as follows: - 10,542 people affected and 3,004 people evacuated - 23 houses destroyed, 114 houses partially destroyed and 1,077 houses damaged - 35 roads stretches, 22 bridges and 16 drains damaged - The damage on the drinking water system in the rural area estimated at USD 50,000 3. On 3 June, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nicaragua convened a second meeting with Government authorities, SNPMAD, the United Nations system and donor governments represented in Nicaragua. 4. In the above meeting, SNPMAD reported that people were leaving temporary shelters in the affected areas and that the Ministry of Family was distributing packages of food and personal effects. Classes have been reestablished. 5. The overall cost for emergency/rehabilitation needs arising from the disaster has been revised to USD 10,980,555, of which the cost for repairing the road network amounts to USD 10,376,224. International Response 6. The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has contributed USD 50,000 toward the purchase and distribution of food, and other relief items for flood victims residing in shelters. 7.
