OCHA Situation Report No. 2 Islamic Republic of Iran - Earthquake 23 June 2002

OCHA has mobilised the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) Team. Situation 1. Media report that, according to the Ministry of Interior, the earthquake has caused 227 deaths in the Quazvin region, 3 deaths in the Hamadan region and has injured some 1,000 people. The Iranian Red Crescent Society reports that some 25,000 people have been left homeless. National and International Response 2. Iranian military forces are reported to have airdropped blankets, food and medicine to people in the region and are helping residents to set up shelters. 3. OCHA has mobilised a United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) Team. Two members will be deployed on 23 June 2002 and another three members will arrive on 24 June 2002. 4. While the Government has indicated it would welcome financial and material assistance from the international community, it has further indicated that there is no requirement for international search and rescue assistance. It anticipates assessment assistance from the United Nations, in the form of the incoming United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) Team. 5. OCHA remains in contact with the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in the Islamic Republic of Iran, and will revert with further information when available. 6.
