SITUATION REPORT: IRAN EARTHQUAKE
June 25, 2002
SITUATION: On June 22, 2002, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 on the
Richter Scale hit Western Iran rendering some 25,000 people homeless
according to Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS). The Qazvin, Hamadan,
and Zanjan regions were the most severely affected areas, located in the
Western part of the country, between 100-200 miles west of Tehren. The
total number of fatalities is now 237 and at least 1300 people have been
injured. Most of the electricity and telecommunications systems are
working, but water systems are still impaired. The IRCS lists outstanding
needs for water and sanitation items, electricity generators, first aid
equipment, and family tents.
RESPONSE: Church World Service partner and Action by Churches Together
(ACT) member, the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), is in the area,
assessing needs of the affected population in cooperation with the IRCS.
CWS is prepared to support requests made by the MECC for material goods
and/or financial support.
