China: Floods - CWS: 28-Jun-02
CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM
EMERGENCY APPEAL: CHINA FLOOD AND LANDSLIDE VICTIMS
#6517 for $75,000
June 28, 2002
SITUATION: From June 6-10 and June 13-24, violent rainstorms created
massive flooding and mudslides that rendered hundreds of thousands of
people homeless in central and western China. To date over 280 people
have been killed and over 1.5 million acres of farmland destroyed. The
hardest hit areas are the Shaanxi, Sichuan, Chongqing, and Guizhou
Provinces in the central part of the country, with total economic loss
estimated at over $600 million.
Many towns, villages and even cites in the western areas were submerged as
torrents of water rushed down the mountains and rivers broke their
embankments. Humanitarian agencies in the area estimate some 20 million
people have been seriously affected by this disaster. Most of the
seriously affected are poor and will not be able to buy food, as crop
damage is expected to create a food shortage in the region for at least 4
- 6 months. Roads, communication, water and power supply facilities were
severely damaged and in some areas totally paralyzed. Emergency relief in
these areas is being delivered on foot, but many remain without any
assistance. In addition to food items, the affected population is in need
of mosquito nets and shelter and blankets to protect them from the cold.
RESPONSE: CWS is responding through partner agency and Action by Churches
Together (ACT) member, the Amity Foundation, who has been engaged in
relief work in China for 16 years. Amity, in close collaboration with
Overseas Friendship Association, is providing food, mosquito nets and
blankets, and rebuilding homes for 5,000 of the most vulnerable families
in the Shaanxi and Sichuan Provinces through June 2003. CWS is also
processing $25,000 in blanket funds to assist Amity's relief efforts.
The budget for this appeal includes $154,061 for food items, $125,665 for
blankets and mosquito nets, and $188,499 for repairs and rebuilding of
homes.
CWS-ERP is seeking $75,000 for this ACT Appeal (ASCN-21). For more
