Caribbean: Storm (Isidore) - CWS: 23-Sep-02

THE CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM SITUATION REPORT: HURRICANE ISIDORE September 23, 2002

SITUATION: Isidore has pounded Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula with heavy rains and flooding after hitting Cuba with flooding. At least two people were reported dead in Mexico from the storm, which was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm today. The storm was expected to turn west later today and gain strength, possibly threatening U.S. Gulf states, though forecasters said it was still too soon to say where Isidore might strike if it moves up the U.S. coast. There were no hurricane-related deaths or injuries reported in Cuba, and flooding had receded there by today, the Associated Press (AP) reported. RESPONSE: CWS is prepared to assist the Cuban Council of Churches, the CWS partner in Cuba, and partners in Mexico as needed. Meanwhile, CWS Disaster Response and Recovery Liaisons (DRRLs) in the United States are tracking the storm's path and developing contingency plans. Call the CWS HOTLINE for updates: (800) 297-1516.
