Mexico: Storm (Isidore) - CWS: 23-Sep-02

THE CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM SITUATION REPORT: HURRICANE ISIDORE September 23, 2002

SITUATION: A hurricane watch remains in effect for much of the US Gulf Coast as Isidore continues to move north and may hit the Louisiana or Mississippi coasts later in the week. Meanwhile, the damage from the storm's effect on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and other parts of Mexico is still being assessed. Samuel Labato of the CWS Office in Mexico reports that the storm in Mexico killed four persons; up to 10,000 remain in temporary shelters and that 80 percent of those affected remain without electricity or drinking water. In addition, more than 100,000 hectares of corn were destroyed. In other areas of Mexico - including Campeche, Chiapas and Quintana Roo - some 7,000 people were evacuated due to the flooding and further rains are expected later this week. RESPONSE: Labato is assessing whether there will be a need for a CWS response in Mexico, depending on how Mexican authorities respond to the disaster. Meanwhile, CWS Disaster Response and Recovery Liaisons (DRRLs) in the United States are tracking the storm's path and developing contingency plans. Call the CWS HOTLINE for updates: (800) 297-1516.
