CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM UPDATE TO EMERGENCY APPEAL: SOUTHERN AFRICA FOOD CRISIS # 6455 for $500,000 September 24, 2002

(The following information about response of CWS partners in Mozambique is an update to the Southern Africa Food Crisis Appeal, originally issued Aug. 16, 2002.) SITUATION: At least 515,000 people in the provinces of Gaza, Inhambane, Manica, Maputo, Sofala, and Tete in Mozambique will require food aid through March 2003, according to the World Food Program and the Mozambique Ministry of Agriculture. The food shortages in the country are a result of severe dry weather during the 2001/2002 crop season which sharply reduced crop yields in the southern and central parts of the country. This comes after devastating floods in both 2000 and 2001 which affected some of the areas now facing food shortages. There are reports of affected families in the southern part of the country resorting to eating wild fruits, seeds, and berries. As a result, the situation is deteriorating rapidly. RESPONSE: CWS is responding in Mozambique through two partners, the Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM) and the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique (PCM/IPM), both of which are providing food aid and much needed seeds to vulnerable communities affected by the current drought in Mozambique. Both expect to complete their work by May 31, 2003. They are working with Lutheran World Federation, Ecumenical Committee for Social Development (CEDES) and Christian Aid as part of a joint response by members of the Action by Churches Together (ACT) International network working in Mozambique. The response includes: - distribution of food to 29,500 beneficiaries in Moamba, Northern Chokwe, Mabalane, Massinigir, Manjacaze, Chibuto, Guija, Xai, xai, Massagena, Inhassoro, Vilankulos, Mabote, Govuro, Chibabava, Cheringoma, Machanga, Machaze, Tambara, Magoe, and Zumbo. - Delivering high-energy protein biscuits to approximately 12,000 school children in rural schools - in drought-affected areas in Gaza, Sofala, and Tete provinces. - Procuring and distributing seeds to 178,756 beneficiaries, or 35,751 families, at one seed pack per family (The breakdown of the seeds: corn: 10kgs, beans: 5kgs, peanuts: 5kgs, Sorghum or millet: 5kgs, cassava: one bundle, sweet potatoes: one bundle.)
