OCHA Situation Report No. 5
Tropical Storm Lili - The Caribbean
29 September 2002


This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any
country.

1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 15:00 GMT today,
Tropical Storm Lili was located near latitude 18.7 north, longitude 77.6
west, or about 40 km east- northeast of Montego Bay, Jamaica. Maximum
sustained winds were near 85km/h with higher gusts.

2. Tropical Storm Warning: in effect in Cayman Brac, Little Cayman,
Jamaica and the Cuban provinces of Camaguey, Las Tunas, Granma and
Santiago de Cuba.

3. Tropical Storm Watch: in effect for Grand Cayman, the Cuban provinces
of Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spritus and Ciego de Avila.

4. Jamaica: The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management
(ODPEM)  reports that a shelter has been opened in St. Catherine. Some
principal roads have been blocked due to flooding.

5. Cuba: According to the United Nations Resident Coordinator, an
emergency was declared for Guantanamo due to heavy rains and flooding.
Tens of thousands of persons living in flood-prone areas have already been
evacuated. Bovine and other animals have been herded towards higher
ground. Precautions have also been taken in the nation's water reservoirs.
