OCHA Situation Report No. 6 Hurricane Lili - The Caribbean 30 September 2002

This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any country. 1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 15:00 GMT today, Tropical Storm Lili has become the fourth hurricane of the 2002 season. Lili was located near latitude 19.8 north, longitude 80.0 west, or very near the Islands of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac. This position is also about 360km southeast of the Isle of Youth. Maximum sustained winds were near 120 km/h with higher gusts. 2. Hurricane Warning: issued for the provinces of Matanzas, Ciudad de la Habana, La Habana, Pinar del Rio and the Isle of Youth, Cuba. Also in effect for all the Cayman Islands. 3. Tropical Storm Warning: in effect for the rest of Cuba and Jamaica. 4. Jamaica: The United Nations Resident Coordinator reports that some 1,000 persons are in shelters across the island. According to the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), St Thomas appears to be the parish most affected by Lili and schools in St Thomas will be closed today. Some 20 communities are reportedly cut off. 5. Cuba: The United Nations Resident Coordinator reports that more than one hundred thousand people have been evacuated in the western provinces as well as some 69 thousand head of cattle. 6.
