Hurricane Lili - The Caribbean

This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any
country.

1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 15:00 GMT today,
Hurricane Lili struck western Cuba. Lili was located near latitude 21.8
north, longitude 83.7 west, or about 35 km east-southeast of Cabo Frances
in western Cuba. This position is also about 185 km southwest of Havana,
Cuba. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 90 mph or 150 km/h
with higher gusts.

2. Hurricane Warning: remains in effect for the Cuban provinces Matanzas,
Ciudad de la Habana, La Habana, Pinar del Rio and the Isle of Youth.

3. Tropical Storm Watch: in effect for the north coast of the Yucatan
peninsula from Cozumel to Progreso.

4. Cuba: The United Nations Resident Coordinator reports that some 108,887
persons have been evacuated from flood-prone coastal areas as of 30
September at 18:00 and 76,281 head of cattle have been transferred to
safer places.

5. According to news reports, school classes in the province of Pinar del
Rio and the capital of Havana have been cancelled. Cubana Airlines have
halted all flights, and train service between Havana and the provincial
capital of Pinar del Rio is suspended.

6. Haiti: The United Nations Resident Coordinator reports that 6 houses
have been damaged and about 50 families have been evacuated.
