OCHA Situation Report No. 9 Hurricane Lili - The Caribbean 3 October 2002

This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any country. 1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 13:00 GMT today, the center of Hurricane Lili was located near latitude 29.4 north, longitude 92.2 west, or about 50 miles south-southwest of New Iberia, Louisiana. Maximum sustained winds are near 100 mph with higher gusts. 2. Hurricane Warning: is in effect from east of High Island, Texas, to the mouth of the Mississippi River. 3. Tropical Storm Warning: is in effect from east of the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Alabama/Florida border, including New Orleans and lake Pontchartrain. 4. Cuba: The United Nations Resident Coordinator reports that 385,323 persons have been evacuated as a result of Hurricane Lili. The hurricane severely battered the Isle of Youth and the western province of Pinar del Rio, which had been struck and damaged a week earlier by Hurricane Isidore. 5. The Civil Defense reports that 56,294 persons have been lodged at shelters run by the Government, where they receive full board and medical attention. 376,554 animals, including 237,976 cows, have been taken to secure places. 6. No fatality or accident was reported during the evacuation effort. Homes and buildings sustained heavy damage, as well as agriculture and communications. After the compounding impact of Hurricanes Isidore and Lili, the citrus harvest, the mainstay of the Isle of Youth, has been destroyed. 7. Jamaica: According to PAHO/WHO, some 1,500 persons are still in shelters. International Response 8. A United Nations Inter-Agency mission will carry out a damage assessment in Pinar del Rio. Another assessment mission will be fielded to the Isle of Youth. 9.
