OCHA Situation Report No. 2 Indonesia - Earthquake 15 October 2002

This situation report is based on information provided by local authorities of the affected region through the OCHA Office in Jakarta. Event and Impact 1. On 10 October 2002 at 17.50 local time (10:50 UTC), a powerful earthquake hit the Papua Province, Indonesia. According to the United States Geological Survey, the magnitude of the earthquake was recorded 7.6 on the Richter Scale and its epicenter was 90 km south of Manokwari in the sea. Eight aftershocks ranging from 5.0 and 6.7 on the Richter Scale were recorded until 12 October, but a tsunami was not reported. 2. The affected areas are Manokwari (the District Capital), Oransbari, Ransiki, Prafi, Sururei, and Bintuni sub-districts of the Manokwari district, the Papua Province, of which Oransbari and Ransiki were the worst hit. At the two sub-districts, roads were damaged and the communities were cut off from transport from/to outside. Assistance has been delivered by sea transportation, using a naval ship. Telecommunication is also unreliable. 3. According to Satlak PBP of the Manokwari District, the total number of deaths is 4, including two children, with 172 seriously injured. 77 houses are reportedly destroyed. Many homes, school buildings, puskesmas, churches and mosques were partially ruined. 4. The District government still awaits further information and data from the affected sites, and has asked for assistance from the provincial government for emergency funding. National Response 5. Satlak PBP in Manokwari and Satkorlak PBP in Jayapura are in close coordination with the relevant government departments. 6. The District Head of Manokwari and a joint team from Satlak PBP Manokwari returned on 13 October from a two-day visit to Rumberpoen Island, an affected sub-district of Manokwari. The team brought 5MT of rice, 50 cartons of instant noodles and sardines, 500gr of sugar and other foodstuffs to the affected area. The team also delivered 20 tents for temporary shelter. Medicinal assistance has been brought in to prevent diarrhea, malaria, and upper-respiratory tract infections. 7. On 15 October, the team delivered the same assistance to Ransiki and Oransbari sub-district using the naval ship. 8. The Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia) brought in two people from their central Disaster Management Committee to the PMI Jayapura branch to add to their team of 30 volunteers on site. PMI has sent 150 family kits and 150 tarpaulins to the displaced families. International Response 9. No external assistance has been requested yet. 10. OCHA is in close contact with the OCHA and UNICEF representatives and the BMG in Papua, through its office in Jakarta. 11.
