OCHA Situation Report No. 2
Mexico - Hurricane Kenna
25 October 2002


This message is not an official hurricane warning or alert for any
country.

1.  The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 15:00 GMT today,
the center of Hurricane Kenna was located near latitude 21.1 north,
longitude 105.9 west or about 75 miles or 115 km west ?southwest of Tepic,
Mexico. Maximum sustained winds have decreased from 160 mph or 260 km/hr
to near 145 mph or 230 km/h with higher gusts. Kenna is a category-four
hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

2.  A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the southwestern coast of Mexico
from Mazatlan southward to La Fortuna, including the Islas Marias.

3.  A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect from south of La Fortuna to
Manzanillo.

4.  According to the Secretaria de Gobernacion, 'emergency' was declared
for 20 municipalities in the state of Nayarit and 5 municipalities in
Jalisco, as of 24 October 2002.

5.  Evacuation measures have been put in place by the National System for
the Civil Protection (SINAPROC). Schools and docks are reportedly closed
across the coastal communities around Mazatlan.
