THE CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM SITUATION REPORT: HURRICANE KENNA October 28, 2002

SITUATION: Hurricane Kenna dissipated into a tropical depression over the weekend, but not before the once-powerful Category 5 hurricane causing major damage to the tourist destination Puerto Vallarta, on the Pacific Coast, as well as other cities in the state of Nayarit state, including San Blas. Also damaged were fishing villages along the coast. Destruction in Nayarit state was major, with 1,690 homes damaged; also damaged were 26 hotels, at least 48 businesses. Some 30,000 people were forced from their homes; two people were killed. RESPONSE: Samuel Lobato, CWS representative in Mexico City, reports that no CWS partners have yet made requests for assistance; "It appears that federal and state authorities have the capacity to respond to the disaster," Lobato reports.
