EMERGENCY APPEAL: Northern Caucasus Flood Rehabilitation
#6622 for $70,000

SITUATION:  Massive flooding and mudslides in the North Caucasus region of
southern Russia in July and August claimed 176 lives and affected more
than 350,000 people.  Nine republics or regions were impacted with
approximately 12,600 homes destroyed and another 78,000 damaged.  Twelve
thousand people are displaced from their homes and remain in temporary
shelters.  The overall estimated damage in the region exceeds $500 million
and it is reported that the majority of affected homes and property were
uninsured.  Flooded farmland and loss of crops has also contributed a
significant economic blow to a traditionally agricultural society.


RESPONSE:  The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), a CWS partner has been
assessing the needs and assisting the most vulnerable disaster affected
families since July.  The ROC has identified significant needs for
reconstruction and rehabilitation especially as winter is imminent.  The
goals of the ROC rehabilitation project are to assist the most vulnerable
families affected by this disaster in repairing and rebuilding their
homes, as well as to provide agricultural inputs for the rehabilitation of
family farms.


PROJECT AREAS:
- House Reconstruction for 476 homes in the affected region
  (approximately 2,110 persons)
- Distribution of household kits to 1454 households (includes
  blankets, sheets, kitchen accessories, utensils, tools and towels)
- Distribution of agricultural kits to 3,966 households (includes
  fertilizers and 16 quantities of various seeds)
- Sewing workshops for at least 2,880 persons

CWS-ERP is seeking $20,000 from its denominational members for this appeal
and will provide $50,000 from CWS Blanket Funds.  For more information,
