OCHA Situation Report No. 2 Indonesia - Floods 11 December 2002

This report is based on information provided by the OCHA office in Indonesia, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, and media reports. Situation 1. The flooding that affected the provinces of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) and North Sumatra is over. Aceh 2. Around 117,000 persons were displaced in six districts in Southwest Aceh. The Satkorlak PBP (Executing Unit for Disaster and IDP Management) of NAD reported that there are still approximately 45,000 displaced persons residing either in halls, mosques, or with relatives. 3. The health surveillance team returned and reported that there are concerns regarding the spread of diarrhea and malaria, and other diseases. North Sumatra 4. The Satkorlak PBP of North Sumatra reported that in Nias, the sub-districts of Gunung Sitoli, Alasa, Amanuraya, Lolomau, Teluk Dalam and Namonalu were affected. In Gunung Sitoli, 470 people were evacuated to safer areas. Most of the affected sub-districts suffered from damaged roads and bridges (a total of 8 bridges in the whole of Nias). The number of damaged homes is yet to be registered. The losses are estimated at Rupiah 14.374 billion (approximately USD 1.6 million). 5. In Central Tapanuli District, one death was reported in Kolang Sub-district. Many homes were slightly damaged and inundated but conditions have improved. Many farming fields, schools, bridges and public facilities have also been damaged, but not severely. The Satkorlak PBP has not provided any estimate of damages. National and International Response 6. District governments in Aceh were able to respond to the needs in their districts, except in Southwest Aceh District. The district Government has provided Rp530 million (USD 60,227) in cash for emergency and post-emergency relief and distributed 113 MT of rice to the victims of the floods who are still displaced. Nevertheless, in some areas, the clean water and sanitation system needs to be rehabilitated, and an additional 300 MT of rice, as well as plastic sheeting for shelter, old clothes and sarongs are needed. 7. The international NGO CARDI will carry out a post-emergency clean-up programme for the victims of the flood. 8. USAID/DCHA/OFDA has given the Indonesian Red Cross USD 25,000 to be utilised to meet the immediate needs of victims of the floods and landslides in both provinces. 9.
