El Salvador: Storm - CWS: 20-May-05

CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM SITUATION REPORT: Hurricane Adrian / Central America May 20, 2005

SUMMARY: Hurricane Adrian, hitting El Salvador's west coast, was downgraded to a tropical storm today, but still caused flooding, according to news reports. The storm was expected to hit Honduras later today, where 160,000 could be evacuated. Some areas of the country were experiencing rain accumulations and some regions could expect up to ten inches of rain, forecasters said. Flashfloods and mudslides were still potential dangers, officials said. At least 19,000 were evacuated in the western part of El Salvador in the face of a rare hurricane that came from the Pacific Coast. RESPONSE: CWS is prepared to assist Action by Churches Together (ACT) International partners in El Salvador and surrounding countries as needed. CWS International Disaster Liaison Don Tatlock, in Honduras for meetings with long-time partner Christian Commission for Development (CCD), reports that all CWS partners are prepared for any potential response. He noted that while Adrian has been downgraded to a tropical storm " there is still concern for flooding and mudslides in Honduras. All flights out of airports have been cancelled and major businesses and government offices are closing today."
