OCHA Situation Report No. 9 Indonesia - Volcanic Activities 19 May 2006

This situation report is based on information provided by the office of the United Nations Resident / Humanitarian Coordinator (RC/HC)'s office in Jakarta. SITUATION 1. The volcanic activity of Mt. Merapi has calmed down, however smany small volcanic tremors and pyroclastic (heat clouds) flows have still been observed. 2. On 19 May, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) reported that 907 People were in shelters in Boyolali District, 8,866 in Magelang, 6,163 in Sleman, and 4,144 in Klaten, totalling to 20,080 persons. 3. Some evacuees prefer to remain together with their extended families, causing overcrowding. Also, some move between their villages and shelters without prior notice, which makes determining actual needs and planning response efforts more difficult. Preliminary information from the Inter-Agency Mission highlights the urgent need for a hygiene promotion campaign in all districts (Please see paragraph 7). NATIONAL RESPONSE 4. On 18 May, the District Governor in Magelang reported that the Central Java provincial government had established a provincial command post in Magelang to coordinate response activities of the three affected districts of Magelang, Boyolali, and Klaten. 5. The national Coordinating Board for the management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB) shared the following list of contact persons for the Mt. On 19 May, the PMI report indicated the following items are needed: In Klaten District - Hygiene kits for babies, baby kits and food parcels In Sleman District - Plastic garbage bags, water reservoir for latrines, milk for infants and the elderly, psychosocial accompaniment and masks In Boyolali District - Masks, drinking water, garbage bins, communication equipment, and transportation facilities for PMI volunteers In Magelang District - Baby milk and food supplement, recreational kits for children and transportation facilities INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE 7. A joint inter-agency mission comprising technical staff from OCHA, PMI/IFRC, UNDP, UNICEF, WFP, WHO, UNESCO, OXFAM GB, and Veteran University Yogyakarta/Kappala started a detailed needs assessment on 17 May in seven locations in Sleman District. The Inter-Agency Mission held a coordination meeting on 18 May. Representatives from Research and Technology Development Agency for Vulcanology (BPPTK) Yogyakarta, ECHO, USAID, and many NGOs attended the meeting. 8. USAID provided an additional USD 50,000 to support emergency efforts in response to volcanic activity through PMI. The funds will be used to procure and transport essential items such as blankets, tents, plastic sheeting, and water. The US Geological Survey (USGS), through USAID-funded Volcano Disaster Assistance Programme, provided technical support and training to local Indonesian volcanologists. 9. OCHA's Regional Disaster Response Advisor (RDRA) based in Kobe, Japan, will be fielded to Yogyakarta on 22 May to support OCHA-Indonesia in monitoring the local situation and assist local authorities in coordinating international assistance. 10. The UN RC/HC Office in Jakarta is in contact with government and non-government actors, as well as with the Indonesian Red Cross to monitor the situation. 11.
