OCHA Situation Report No. 1 INDONESIA - Flash Floods and Landslides in South Sulawesi Province 21 June 2006

This report is based on information received from the UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator's Office in Jakarta. SITUATION Torrential rains lasting a three-day period starting Monday (18 June) triggered flash floods in South Sulawesi Province. The Provincial Coordinating Unit for the Management of Disaster (SATKORLAK PB) in South Sulawesi reported (20 June) that flash floods with a height ranging between one and two meters hit eight districts (Sinjai, Jeneponto, Bulukumba, Bantaeng, Luwu Utara, Bone, Gowa, and Sidrap) midnight Monday. Two districts, Gowa and Sidrap were also hit by landslides. The worst affected area is Sinjai District. The floods and landslides have damaged hundreds of houses, inundated rice fields and caused fishponds to overflow. PMI/IFRC reports that flashfloods and landslides have blocked some main roads and bridges cutting off access to affected areas. The death toll as reported by the Ministry of Social Affairs (21 June, 16:00 hours) is as follows: dead persons 115, missing persons 22. SATKORLAK PB reported damage to infrastructure including access routes (roads and bridges) in Bulukumba and Bone Districts, a dam in Sidrap District, and 200 hectares of rice fields in Bantaeng District. In Jeneponto District 100 livestock are missing. NATIONAL RESPONSE The Deputy for Disaster Management of the National Coordinating Board (BAKORNAS PB) will visit the affected areas today (21 June) together with officials from the Ministries of Health and Social Affairs to monitor the emergency response and hand over relief assistance. The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has deployed SATGANA (Field Action Team) from PMI branches to carry out an assessment and facilitate the evacuation process in all the affected areas together with the local government. There are reports that floodwaters have started to subside in several areas including the Sinjai District. PMI South Sulawesi also mobilized 13 volunteers to assist the emergency response initiatives and established a field kitchen for at least 200 displaced persons. The Ministry of Social Affairs will dispatch 100 tons rice, 2,000 boxes instant noodles, 10,000 sarongs, and 10,000 blankets Wednesday (21 June). The Ministry has already prepared six evacuation kits consisting of tents, rubber boats, life vests, generators, and field kitchen equipment. The Ministry of Health has opened health posts at provincial and district levels for affected people, revitalized community health centers, distributed medical supplies and equipment and deployed surveillance team for emergency sanitation in the affected areas. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE The UN RC/HC Office in Jakarta will continue to be in close contact with pertinent government and non-government institutions, as well as the Indonesian Red Cross to monitor the situation.
