OCHA Situation Report No. 1
INDONESIA - Flash Floods and Landslides in South Sulawesi Province
21 June 2006
This report is based on information received from the UN
Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator's Office in Jakarta.
SITUATION
Torrential rains lasting a three-day period starting Monday (18 June)
triggered flash floods in South Sulawesi Province. The Provincial
Coordinating Unit for the Management of Disaster (SATKORLAK PB) in South
Sulawesi reported (20 June) that flash floods with a height ranging
between one and two meters hit eight districts (Sinjai, Jeneponto,
Bulukumba, Bantaeng, Luwu Utara, Bone, Gowa, and Sidrap) midnight
Monday. Two districts, Gowa and Sidrap were also hit by landslides. The
worst affected area is Sinjai District. The floods and landslides have
damaged hundreds of houses, inundated rice fields and caused fishponds
to overflow. PMI/IFRC reports that flashfloods and landslides have
blocked some main roads and bridges cutting off access to affected
areas.
The death toll as reported by the Ministry of Social Affairs (21 June,
16:00 hours) is as follows: dead persons 115, missing persons 22.
SATKORLAK PB reported damage to infrastructure including access routes
(roads and bridges) in Bulukumba and Bone Districts, a dam in Sidrap
District, and 200 hectares of rice fields in Bantaeng District. In
Jeneponto District 100 livestock are missing.
NATIONAL RESPONSE
The Deputy for Disaster Management of the National Coordinating Board
(BAKORNAS PB) will visit the affected areas today (21 June) together
with officials from the Ministries of Health and Social Affairs to
monitor the emergency response and hand over relief assistance.
The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has deployed SATGANA (Field Action Team)
from PMI branches to carry out an assessment and facilitate the
evacuation process in all the affected areas together with the local
government. There are reports that floodwaters have started to subside
in several areas including the Sinjai District. PMI South Sulawesi also
mobilized 13 volunteers to assist the emergency response initiatives and
established a field kitchen for at least 200 displaced persons.
The Ministry of Social Affairs will dispatch 100 tons rice, 2,000 boxes
instant noodles, 10,000 sarongs, and 10,000 blankets Wednesday (21
June). The Ministry has already prepared six evacuation kits consisting
of tents, rubber boats, life vests, generators, and field kitchen
equipment.
The Ministry of Health has opened health posts at provincial and
district levels for affected people, revitalized community health
centers, distributed medical supplies and equipment and deployed
surveillance team for emergency sanitation in the affected areas.
