Indonesia: Flash Floods and Landslides in South Sulawesi
and South Kalimantan Provinces

This report is based on information received from the UN
Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator's Office in Jakarta.
I. SITUATION
SOUTH SULAWESI PROVINCE
The Provincial Coordinating Unit for the Management of Disaster
(SATKORLAK PB) South Sulawesi reported the following impact of recent
flash floods and landslides in South Sulawesi and South Kalimantan
Provinces:

The death toll remains at 226.
1. The local media reports that road access to Kindang village in
Bulukumba district has been cut off. Work is underway to clear the
roads using one excavator and one loader. Additional heavy equipment is
needed to speed up progress.
GORONTALO PROVINCE
2. SATKORLAK PB Gorontalo reports that conditions are improving. Only a
small number of areas in Kota Selatan and Kota Timur sub-districts
remain flooded. The number of displaced persons in the area has dropped
significantly from over 5,000 to around 1,000.
SOUTH KALIMANTAN PROVINCE
3. SATKORLAK PB South Kalimantan reports that the rain has stopped.
Banjar and Tanahbumbu districts are the most affected areas. In Banjar
the number of IDPs has reached roughly 40,000 (or 8,644 households).
4. The death toll stands at six (one in Kotabaru and five in
Tanahbumbu). Two persons are still missing in Tanahlaut.
5. Access to the affected areas is limited. In Tanahbaru district, six
sub-districts with 300 households have been cut off. Stocks of food and
medical supplies are limited.
II.NATIONAL RESPONSE
SOUTH SULAWESI PROVINCE
6. The local government continues to mobilize heavy equipment, clean
water and food supplies.
GORONTALO PROVINCE
7. Members of House of Representatives (MPR) and Parliament (DPR) will
visit the affected areas on 4 to 5 July to discuss emergency operations
with the local government.
SOUTH KALIMANTAN PROVINCE
8. The local government has submitted a request to the National
Coordinating Board for the Management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB) for an
emergency response fund of Rp.2 billion (equivalent to US$210,500).
9. The Health Office has established health posts at evacuation sites.
It is also providing advocacy on clean water and sanitation and
distributing water purification tablets. The Office continues to
monitor communicable disease control and conduct inter-sectoral
coordination on emergency response.
III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE
10. OXFAM GB is in contact with PMI South Sulawesi for possible
assistance of 1,000 hygiene kits.
11. The UN RC/HC Office in Jakarta will continue to be in close contact
with pertinent government and non-government institutions, as well as
the Indonesian Red Cross to monitor the situation in South Sulawesi,
Gorontalo and South Kalimantan Provinces.
IV. REQUIRED ASSISTANCE
SOUTH SULAWESI PROVINCE
12. SATKORLAK PB says food and clean water are needed.
SOUTH KALIMANTAN PROVINCE
13. SATKORLAK PB South Kalimantan says rice, instant noodles, and
medical supplies are needed.
14. The Provincial Health says that water purification tablets and
sanitation facilities are needed.
