Vietnam: Typhoon

This situation report is based on information received from OCHA 
Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific in Bangkok.

Situation

1. After hitting the Philippines on 28 September, Typhoon Xangsane 
landed on Vietnam on 1 October and swept a number of central and central 
highlands provinces especially Da Nang City, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam 
and Quang Ngai.

2. According to the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control, 30 
have been killed and 269 people injured and one person is missing. The 
number of damaged house is 227,231 of which 6,256 were totally 
collapsed. A total of 786 boats were sank or damaged.  A total loss is 
estimated at VND 9.982 (approximately USD 624 million).

National Response

3. The government started its preparation activities on 27 September, 
including evacuation of 39,615 people to safe zone and sending alert to 
10,703 boats before arrival of the Typhoon. All related government 
organizations and media were involved and updated publicly on all 
preparation activities. The Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister 
directly headed these activities.

4. While the government has not requested any international assistance, 
it started to mobilize funds to support affected provinces.

International Response

5.  The UN agencies sent three joint assessment missions to Hue, Da, 
Nang and Quang Nam on 4 October. The missions will present findings and 
recommendations early next week. Based on the above, the action plan 
will be prepared in consultation with the government.

6. OCHA remains in close contact with UNDP office in Hanoi and will 
provide further information as it becomes available. This situation
