THE CHURCH WORLD SERVICE: EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROGRAM CWS SITUATION REPORT: INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE December 18, 2006

SITUATION: An earthquake early Monday on Indonesia's Sumatra Island -- the site of the devastating 2004 tsunami and earthquake -- has resulted in deaths and damaged scores of buildings. Initial reports indicate that at least four and perhaps as many as seven were killed, and that the tremor was either 5.5 or 6-magnitude. Church World Service Indonesia reports that at least 160 homes were damaged and blocked a major road between Padang, West Sumatra, to Medan, North Sumatra, the site of a CWS warehouse. RESPONSE: Church World Service Indonesia has sent a team to the affected area to conduct an assessment, coordinate a response and prepare for distribution of materials. Part of the planned response includes distribution, by Tuesday (Dec. 19), of 273 tents and tarpaulins and 600 packages of CWS Baby Kits. CWS is working in coordination with local and provincial disaster response units and with fellow members of the Action by Churches Together (ACT) network in the region, including YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) and Yayasan Tanggul Bencana Indonesia (YTBI). Further updates on this situation and response are expected this week.
