Indonesia: Flash Floods and Landslides

This report is developed by HC/RC Office in Indonesia based on
information provided by the National Coordinating Board for the
Management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB), Provincial Coordinating Unit for
the Management of Disaster (SATKORLAK PB) East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesian
Red Cross (PMI), and media reports.
I. SITUATION
1. Torrential rains, over a five-day period starting Monday, 26 February
2007, triggered flash floods and Landslides in Manggarai District of
East Nusa Tenggara Province. SATKORLAK PB East Nusa Tenggara reported
that flash floods occurred in Reok Sub-district and landslides hit seven
sub-districts, namely Cibal, Wae Ri'I, Lamba Leda, Poco Ranaka, Ruteng,
Langke Rembong, and Kota Komba. The floods and landslides have damaged
at least 37 houses and one school, and have blocked some roads and
bridges, cutting off access to affected areas.
2. The casualties reported by the BAKORNAS PB are as follows:

3. SATKORLAK PB East Nusa Tenggara reported difficulty to access the
widespread areas because many roads and bridges were blocked. Indonesian
Red Cross confirmed the transportation access challenges and reported
the difficulty of telecommunications access.
4. Casualty figures will most likely increase as information becomes
available from areas difficult to access. BAKORNAS PB is mobilizing
helicopters to improve access to isolated villages.
5. BAKORNAS PB reported the urgent needs included mosquito nets, tents,
plastic sheeting, body bags, water purifiers, medicines and health
equipment, big torches, masks and boot shoes.
II. NATIONAL RESPONSE
1. BAKORNAS PB deployed two rapid response staff to monitor the
developments and facilitate coordination of relief efforts in
collaboration with SATKORLAK PB East Nusa Tenggara, SATLAK PB Manggarai,
armed forces, Department of Health and other Government institutions.
2. Department of Social Affairs dispatched 5 tons of rice and other food
supplies, such as instant noodle, cooking oil, canned fish, supplement
food for under-5 children, and milk for pregnant women.
3. Department of Health deployed a team of health personnel and
delivered medicines to affected areas.
4. The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) delivered initial emergency response
assistance from PMI branch in Surabaya to augment assistance provided
from its East Nusa Tenggara branch. It shipped 1,000 family kits, 2,000
food packages, 100 body bags, medicines, 1 doctor, 2 paramedics and a
number of volunteers.
III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE
1. The UN RC/HC Office in Jakarta continues to monitor the situation in
close contact with pertinent government and non-government institutions,
as well as the Indonesian Red Cross. The Government of Indonesia is not
appealing for international assistance in responding to this disaster.
However, assistance provided by international organizations operating in
the country will be appreciated.
