OCHA Situation Report No. 2 Indonesia: Flash Floods and Landslides East Nusa Tenggara Province 5 March 2007

This report is developed by HC/RC Office in Indonesia based on information provided by the National Coordinating Board for the Management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB), Provincial Coordinating Unit for the Management of Disaster (SATKORLAK PB) East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), and media reports. I. SITUATION 1. SATKORLAK PB East Nusa Tenggara reports that search and rescue activities continue, using equipment from the Bureau of Public Works. Road access to the affected sub-districts remains blocked in some points. The Bureau of Public Works, together with local armed forces posts, local police offices and communities, are working to reopen road access to the affected areas. The electricity has been cut off in most of the affected sub-districts. 2. According to SATKORLAK PB East Nusa Tenggara, displaced persons have been scattered mostly in temporary tents provided by local authorities in each village. Currently the total number of IDPs is estimated at 1,187 persons. 3. NATIONAL RESPONSE 1. SATLAK PB Manggarai District distributed food and non-food items to the affected communities. 50 metric tonnes of rice has been made on standby to be released by the Bureau of Social Affairs at the district level. 2. The Department of Health has delivered 100 body bags, medicine, 2,000 masks and 30 rubber gloves to Bureau of Health at Manggarai District. 3. In anticipation of transportation challenges, BAKORNAS PB has coordinated with SATKORLAK PB and the military air forces to provide a helicopter and two planes (a CN 235 and a Hercules C 130). Posts in Halim Perdanakusuma, Kupang and Maumere airports have been set up to accelerate assistance. 4. BAKORNAS PB has provided IDR 50 million to SATLAK PB Manggarai District in response to the disaster. 5. The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) East Nusa Tenggara has conducted a damage analysis and needs assessment in affected areas, and dispatched a 20 person SATGANA (Disaster Response Team) to conduct the assessment and assist the search and rescue. 6. PMI reports that urgent needs include the body bags, water purification systems, emergency medicine, boots, rain coats, emergency lamps, family kits and food packages. III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE 1. The UN RC/HC Office in Jakarta continues to monitor the situation in close contact with pertinent government and non-government institutions, as well as the Indonesian Red Cross. BAKORNAS PB advises that agencies willing to provide relief assistance should coordinate their efforts with the local authorities.
