Indonesia: Flash Floods and Landslides

This report is developed by HC/RC Office in Indonesia based on
information provided by the National Coordinating Board for the
Management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB), Provincial Coordinating Unit for
the Management of Disaster (SATKORLAK PB) East Nusa Tenggara, District
Coordinating Unit for the Management of Disaster (SATLAK PB) Manggarai,
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), NGOs, and media reports.
I. SITUATION
1. Search and rescue missions have ended as of 10 March. Roads in Cibal
sub-district, the area worst affected by the flash floods and
landslides, are mostly accessible, however, access remains blocked in
Kentol Village of Cibal sub-district. The Public Works personnel,
together with the military, police and SATLAK PB, continue road cleaning
efforts. The main focus now is road clearing.
2. In some affected areas, the situation has begun to return to normal.
As of 12 March, schools have reopened and are serving around 1,000
students.
3. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will visit the affected areas 15
March.
4. The latest BAKORNAS PB figures on casualties, missing persons and
IDPs are as follows:

5. The damage caused by landslides and flash floods have affected 92
houses, 47 hectares of paddy field, 25 hectares of plantations, one
primary school, and one bridge.
II. NATIONAL RESPONSE
1. On 12 March, two C-130 Hercules airplanes, carrying assistances from
the President, the Department of Social Affairs, the Department of
Health and the Coordinating Minister of People's Welfare, arrived in
Maumere. Four tonnes of relief items were directly forwarded to Ruteng
sub-district via Fokker 27 planes, while the remaining 13 tonnages would
be transported in the coming days.
2. On 13 March, SATLAK PB distributed two trucks of assistances in Cibal
sub-district, another two trucks in Lamba Leda sub-district, and one
truck in Ruteng sub-district.
3. While continuing its immediate response, PMI has conducted further
needs assessments in Cibal, Lamba Leda and Poco Ranaka sub-districts.
Teams from the PMI East Java Chapter have bolstered health services
delivery.
III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE
1. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has sent 1,700 individual
kits and 100 midwifery kits as part of its USD 50,000 humanitarian
assistance package. UNFPA has also been working with the local District
Health Office and the community health center to provide mobile
reproductive health services to affected communities and to establish a
referral health system.
2. In addition to the distribution of non-food items (blankets, sarongs
and hygiene kits), The Church World Service (CWS) will distribute 2.4
tonnages of high energy biscuits to flash flood and landslide affected
communities.
3. World Vision has distributed supplementary food to approximately 350
children under five-years-old in areas of IDP concentration in Cibal
sub-district. World Vision will also distribute food and non-food items
and provide health and education assistances.
4. The UN RC/HC Office in Jakarta continues to monitor the situation in
close contact with relevant government and non-government institutions,
as well as the Indonesian Red Cross.
